In 1878 the Morgan Silver Dollar was first issued and the original version of this design featured 8 tail feathers. Ornithologists however pointed out that the bald eagle represented on the coin were known to have an odd number of tail feathers. The design was changed and the version with 8 tailfeathers was only produced during 1878.
The obverse depicts Liberty wear the Phrygian cap, with the word "liberty" featured on the band. Meanwhile the reverse features a bald eagle clutching arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other.
