1913 was the inaugural year for the Buffalo Nickel. During this first year two types were struck. The Type 1 coins as pictured here, depicted the buffalo atop a mount with the words Five Cents underneath. However this wording was high in the relief of the coin, resulting to excessive wear.
The Type 2 reverse features the Five Cents text recessed below the mound and drastically reducing the wear on the text.
Designed by James Earle Fraser the obverse features the profile of a Native American, meanwhile the reverse features the iconic bison, Black Diamond.
